Kuchipudi Dance & Music Training

PADAM

Prafulla’s Academy of Dance & Music (PADAM) is dedicated to preserving and teaching the classical Indian dance form of Kuchipudi along with the accompanying tradition of Carnatic music and Nattuvangam.

PADAM provides structured training in this Indian classical dance form and music for students of all ages. Over the last 25 years the academy has become a recognized center for Kuchipudi training serving students across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and the wider New England region as well as students from other states.

Learning Indian Classical Arts

At PADAM we firmly believe that age is no barrier to learning these classical arts. Students ranging from three years old to adults have successfully trained in dance and music through our programs.

Training follows a structured curriculum designed to develop rhythm, expression, discipline, and artistic confidence. Students are also encouraged to participate in cultural and charitable events which help them gain performance experience and connect with the community. PADAM participates in many of these events every year.

Inspired by the traditional gurukula style of teaching, PADAM emphasizes respect for tradition, dedication to learning, and personal growth.

Nattuvangam Training

Interested students also learn Nattuvangam, the art of maintaining rhythmic beats with hand cymbals while reciting rhythmic syllables during classical dance performances.

This training helps dancers gain a deeper understanding of rhythm and musical structure within Kuchipudi performances.

The Tradition of Kuchipudi Dance

The Kuchipudi dance tradition traces its origins to the ancient Indian treatise on performing arts known as the Natya Shastra. The dance form was later systematized and popularized by the renowned guru Siddhendra Yogi.

PADAM maintains this classical tradition while providing structured training to modern students.

PADAM currently offers classes at the following locations:
